Descripción

First illustrated edition. With elaborate wood-cut engravings by Clare Leighton, both on plates and as large chapter headings. Tall 8vo, publisher's original tan buckram by the Haddon Craftsmen, the upper cover with a Leighton woodcut pastedown within a double-ruled red frame, the spine gilt lettered within a red painted label and with additional lettering in red at the tail. In the publisher's original glassine jacket. 397, [1] pp. A very fine copy, the text pristine and spotless, the cloth also in essentially pristine condition but for a bit of trivial toning to the edges not covered by the glassine. The glassine wrapper itself is quite scarce and is complete and intact but for a few tiny chips and tears.

Edizione: the first illustrated edition, a book beautifully embellished with the woodcuts of clare leighton. the woodcuts are instantly recognizable as ms. leighton's work, being similar to the famous series of new england images she produced for wedgwood china. they were a perfect choice to accompany robert's finest work, an american classic and beautifully written tribute to the human spirit.
"this is a book that embraces life . . . . [i]t is written in a prose at once lucid and arresting, rhythmical, fresh in phrasing and construction, giving always the effect of effortless arrangement." new york times
this handsome edition was produced to the highest standards. it was both printed and bound for viking by the haddon craftsmen. the text is set in baskerville and printed on specially made full-rag paper.
