Book is in excellent condition in light blue cloth with gilt embossed art on cover and print at spine. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind except for five pages of text with underlining. Dust jacket shows signs of shelf wear at edges and corners, no tears. Previous owner's bookplate inside front cover and marked as such at upper front endpaper; last page (blank) has handwritten notes. After James Cook's death, France, with the active support of Louis XVI, organized a large-scale expedition to the Pacific, planned to last four years, concentrating on areas of the Pacific left unexplored or inadequately explored by Cook. It was to be led by an experienced and highly-regarded naval officer, Galaup de La Perouse. (from the flyleaf) Maps.
