Descripción

2 volumes. An early printing of Goldsmith's classic work on Greece. 8vo, handsomely bound in contemporary three-quarter polished calf over marbled paper covered boards, the spines with gilt arabesque tooling gilt, compartments rulled in gilt, red morocco lettering labels gilt. iv, 452; 375, [65] Index pp. A very pleasing set of this elusive work. The bindings are handsome and pleasing, the text-blocks are clean and crisp, the bindings strong and the hinges tight, a bit of old period underlining to a small number of leaves in Vol. II.

Edizione: a handsome period copy of this classic work. goldsmith was one of the great writers of the day, a rather universal intellect who brought english to grand literary acceptance in a latin age. he was also author of the vicar of wakefield and she stoops to conquer, two of the great early works in english. “dr. goldsmith” is especially respected for his well penned and researched histories of rome and greece. with samuel johnson, he was a founding member of "the club" which counted a number of the most important intellectuals and writers of the day in its membership.
