Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Einige, wenige Seiten weisen am oberen Rand Randlren und Einrissen auf, sonst ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar ohne Anstreichungen / A few pages have edge wear and tears at top edge, otherwise a good and clean copy with no markings. - This work is a complete English translation of the Latin Etymologies of Isidore, bishop of Seville (c. 560-636). Isidore compiled the work between c.615 and the early 630s and it takes the form of an encyclopedia, arranged by subject matter. It contains much lore of the late classical world beginning with the Seven Liberal Arts, including Rhetoric, and touches on thousands of topics ranging from the names of God, the terminology of the law, the technologies of fabrics, ships, and agriculture, to the names of cities and rivers, the theatrical arts, and cooking utensils. Isidore provides etymologies for most of the terms he explains, finding in the causes of words the underlying key to their meaning. This book offers a highly readable translation of the twenty books of the Etymologies, one of the most widely known texts for a thousand years from Isidores time. / Contents Acknowledgements page ix Note to the reader xi INTRODUCTION Introduction Historical background Chronology Life and works The sources of the Etymologies The character of the Etymologies The influence of the Etymologies Editions of the Etymologies and this translation Bibliography THE ETYMOLOGIES Analytical table of contents book i Grammar book ii Rhetoric and dialectic book iii Mathematics, music, astronomy book iv Medicine book v Laws and times book vi Books and ecclesiastical offices book vii God, angels, and saints book viii The Church and sects book ix Languages, nations, reigns, the military, citizens, family relationships book x Vocabulary book xi The human being and portents book xii Animals book xiii The cosmos and its parts book xiv The earth and its parts book xv Buildings and fields book xvi Stones and metals book xvii Rural matters book xviii Warandgames book xix Ships, buildings, and clothing book xx Provisions and various implements APPENDIX Correspondence of Isidore and Braulio INDEXES General index 417 Index of Greek words Index of citations.
