Trachtenberg, a Professor of Fine Arts at New York University's Institute of Fine Arts, is a specialist in Italian architectural history. This monograph discusses the political and cultural situation in Florence in the late middle ages, and explains the separate contributions of the three people who designed the Campanile: Giotto, Andrea Pisano and Francesco Talenti.
