8vo [22.5 x 14 cm]; 2 volumes in one, iv, 411; [i], 324 pp, 20 plates on 19 sheets including 5 with original hand coloring, each volume with engraved title page and vignette, tables, bibliog, index, list of plates. original paper-covered boards with recent cloth spine, boards worn, title lettering on spine paper labels, name on endpaper, title page & few other page margins lightly foxed, interior is clean & unmarked, duplicate of 6-leaf signature in vol. II. A pictu Sabin 33751. Goodman 622. Welch 161. Field 740. Humboldt was the most influential scientist of his time and traveled widely in Spanish America from 1799-1804. The work describes the geography and ruins he observed in Mexico and Peru and is one of the earliest archaeological works on the Aztec and Inca civilizations, with excellent plates. The engraved title pages have vignettes of Pyramid of Cholula on one and Cotopaxi on other.
