In the year he died, Lapo wrote the treatise De curiae commodis. This work is written elegantly, learnedly, and angrily. It is a human document alive with information for intellectual, social, and cultural historians. -- Celenza presents a detailed examination of this neglected but important humanist. A contemporary and acquaintance of Leonardo Bruni, Leon Battista Alberti, and other humanist greats, Lapo da Castiglionchio the Younger, in his most important prose work, presented a bird's-eye view of the papal court. This volume expands the growing canon of Italian Renaissance Latin literature by providing the first truly critical edition of this work as well as the first-ever English translation. In addition, Celenza offers a study that illuminates the social and intellectual context of early humanism. The book discusses Lapo's life and work, the literary context of the dialogue, and the manner in which Lapo skillfully criticized the papal court even as he sought employment there. -- Sensitive to the ambiguities of humanist discourses, Celenza argues that Lapo's position is a subtle one and that Lapo sincerely praises the potential of the curia as he criticizes its actuality. The interpretive key for this conclusion lies in understanding the import of a Stoicizing passage on the virtues in the dialogue. Celenza's examination of Lapo deepens our under-standingjOf the humanist movement in one of its most interesting phases. Here, Lapo's liminal status is of primary importance.
