Descripción

First Illustrated Edition, the First Edition solely in Spanish, following the bilingual Spanish-English edition translated by Rolfe Humphries and published just a few weeks earlier in New York. With four full page plates from drawings by Garcia Lorca, two in colour and two in black and white. Titlepage printed in black and red. 4to, publisher’s original printed wrappers and with the jacket band announcing “Un libro inedito de Federico Garcia Lorca.” Now preserved in a folding case. 187pp. A fine, uncut copy, very well preserved indeed.

Edizione: first illustrated edition and first solely in spanish of garcia lorca’s final published cycle of poems. the poems were published posthumously in 1940, but were written during his residency in new york in 1929 and 1930. his experiences in new york, amongst the disenfranchised african american population, transformed him into a passionate advocate of the theatre of social action. this edition followed the bilingual new york publication by only a few weeks. it is the first to include his art work. lorca rose to international acclaim as one of the members of the generation of ‘27, an influential group of poets that arose in spanish literary circles. he was presumed killed by anti-communist forces just days after the outbreak of the spanish civil war.
