Clapperton, who participated in an earlier journey in this area under the leadership of Denham, on this second expedition journeyed in part with his personal servant, Richard Lander, who later went on to finally solve the mystery of the Niger. Clapperton travelled to Bussa, 'where he ascertained the details of Park's death' (Sykes, History of Exploration), to Kano and to Katunga and Sokoto, where he died.
