14 volumes. The fine Edition De Luxe, limited to 1000 numbered sets of which this is set 109. With a total of 73 fine photogravures from paintings by various artists, each with tissue guards captioned in red, these being a frontispiece and 5 or 6 plates per volume, four of the frontispieces are hand-coloured. Tall 8vo, handsomely bound in contemporary three-quarter crushed crimson morocco over cloth-covered boards, the corner pieces and backs gilt trimmed. The spines with tall gilt ruled raised bands and gilt tooled compartments featuring a central floral motif within a multi-ruled gilt framework, two compartments gilt lettered, additional gilt at the tail, t.e.g. A very handsome set of this deluxe issue, internally very fine and essentially as new, many volumes remain partially unopened, the fine ivory wove-paper spotless, as are the plates. The handsome bindings with some minor rubbing at the edges and tips, one volume with an abrasion at its head and to one band but with no chips, a few others with some mottling or spots to the morocco.

Edizione: a very handsome de luxe limited set of goethe's select works, including thomas carlyle's masterful translation of 'wilhelm meister's apprentice'. goethe was a great inspiration to carlyle and this was one of his most important early works. along with 'wilhelm meister's apprentice' and 'wilhelm meister's travels' (also translated by carlyle) this handsome collection includes: 'faust'; 'poems'; 'letters from switzerland'; 'iphigenia in tauris'; 'torquato tasso'; 'goetz von berlichingen'; 'the fellow culprits'; 'truth and fiction'; 'sorrows of werther', and george henry lewes' two volume 'life of goethe'.
