Descripción

First American edition, the first issue with the Houghton Osgood imprint on binding and textual errors as noted in BAL. 8vo, publisher's original green cloth, covers beveled and ruled in blind, spine gilt lettered and ruled, "Houghton, Osgood and Co" imprint in gilt at the foot of the spine. 347pp. A fine and bright copy, the text with no spotting or evidence of much use, the green cloth bright, the gilt with no fading, a very handsome copy, unusually so.

Edizione: the american first issue, one of only 1500 copies believed to be printed. uncommon in such bright condition. charming, intelligent, romantic, with female characters that make the men seem like the ultimate idiots, but for loving them! many lovely little twists and turns to the story. one of henry james' earlier works, confidence is set in the familiar territory of young rich americans on extended trips in europe, making friendships and romantic acquaintances with other americans in the expatriate society that has been established in glamorous settings.
