The author, who ran a nursery and was the first editor of the Canadian Horticulturist, produced this first comprehensive eastern Canadian gardening book for conditions in Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Hedrick and Woodburn p. 552: "The author's long, practical experience as a Canadian nurseryman enabled him to write a really useful book for the region". "It was not until 1872 that eastern Canadian gardeners could consult an extensive all-Canadian garden book" (von Baeyer p. 143). The color plates represent each of the three themes in the book, and are early Canadian chromolithographs.
