The author, settlement officer of the Bannu district, describes the geography, history, politics, land revenue system, social life, etc, but devotes most of the book to the popular stories, ballads, riddles, proverbs of the people and provides both the English and Pashto translations of the proverbs which he supplies in about 30 categories. The appendix gives the Vesh custom, particularly important in understanding land rights and tenure, in five communities including Matora, Sikander Khel, Mulazai, Mamu Khel, Abba Khel, a considerable expansion over what is described in the text.
