Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - Bent over a copper plate Enrico Baj gains hold of his material with the deftness of a craftsman torn between emotion and knowledge of the process at hand. Upholsterer, cabinetmaker and glazier at the drop of a hat, Baj is equally well versed as an engraver and forever ready to learn. The job isn't that simple and the dry-point isn't that easy to handle ; yet for those who know the care and technique required Baj's graphic �uvre is nothing short of exemplary. For all its resemblance to writing, etching is a sculptural medium subject to precise material demands. The artist's keen sense of those demands transpires in his graphic visions which are varied and expressed in a language suited to the art of etching. Whether they are those illustrating Lucrete's " De Rerum Natura, " or pictures of his valiant men at war (generals and their consorts), Enrico Baj finds the right adaptation to his medium and as an engraver expresses himself differently from the way in which he paints. The reason is that, as a craftsman, Baj knows his metier and he has a knack for matching procedures and materials with subject matter to such a degree that new finds in this area feed right back into his other work.
