Descripción

Gutes Exemplar. - Englisch. - Mit Beilage (Faltblatt in Deutsch) "Zeittafel fr den islamischen und ostasiatischen Kulturbereich". - (Gewidmet Andrew S. Ehrenkreutz). - This handbook concentrates on the geographical area of Iran, Egypt, Turkey, the Fertile Crescent and the Arabian Peninsula; that is, Southwest Asia and Egypt. Occasionally material touching on Libya, the Sudan, the Ottomans in Europe and Muslims in Afghanistan is mentioned. However, in order to avoid confusion with Southeast Asia, the geographically vague but popular term of "Near East" has been used in the title. The time dimension begins with 570 A.D. and ends with June 1, 1974. As there is no single accepted transliteration system from the Arabic script to the Latin alphabet, the first chapter identifies some of the common Latin variations for particular Arabic script letters and vowel sounds, as well as the transliteration system used by the Middle East Studies Association. Sixty-nine abbreviations of major periodicals and reference works are listed in Chapter II, while the following chapter identifies the abbreviation for sixty-five Twentieth Century political, economic and social groups. In this chapter each abbreviation is followed by its full title and some pertinent data. The next three chapters are concerned with the names, dates and genealogies of dynasties and rulers. The first section, Chapter IV, includes the names of over one-hundred dynasties with their initial and terminal dates given in the Muslim and Christian calendars. Chapter V, a Table of Rulers, has thirty eight lists, including the names of Turkish Presidents, Israeli Prime Ministers, British officials in Egypt and Palestine and French officials in Syria, as well as the rulers of over thirty Muslim dynasties. The last chapter for this section includes twenty-five genealogy tables for the major Medieval Islamic dynasties and families. All three chapters are indexed in the General Index. Chapter VII is an historical atlas of thirty-one maps with almost two-thirds of them covering proposed and actual divisions of Southwest Asia in this century. The special Map Index includes variant spellings of many of the names. The next chapter is the standard table for converting Muslim and Christian dates from one calendar to the other, while Chapter IX is a Glossary of approximately two hundred fifty words. The last chapter is a chronology of over five hundred data fully indexed. .
