The work is paged continuously. Two title-pages pronted in red and black types. FINE FIRST EDITION OF THIS BIOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY OF ARTS AND ARTISTS BY SPOONER. The work includes a list of painters, a list of artists, a list of copyists, a list of authorities, a list of artists’ monograms (24 plates) and the biographical dictionary (v. 1. A-L; v. 2. M-Z). Shearjashub Spooner (December 3, 1809 in Brandon, Vermont – March 14, 1859 in Plainfield, New Jersey) was an American physician and writer. After graduating as a physician in Middlebury in 1830 and New York City, in 1835, he became a dentist in New York. Prov.: Ownership handwritten inscription at title-pages (N. P. Chipman, Washington – D.C., Oct. 15, 1869) and large engraved labels glued at first free-leaves of both volumes (Ex libris Constantine Raphael-Bricca). Dr. Constantine Raphael-Bricca, widely known as an eye, ear, nose and throat specialist, was born in San Francisco in 1880. He was a graduate of St. Ignatius College with the degree of Bachelor of Arts, and also of the medical department of the University of California. In his special line of practice, he had extensive experience both in the East and in Europe, having studied with the master minds of this particular branch of the medical profession. Dr. Bricca was chief medical inspector of the San Francisco public schools during the last administration, having inaugurated a system of medical inspection and examination never before known in public school work. He resigned in the latter part of 1909. Dr. Bricca’s activities have not been confined to his profession. He was president of the Harlow-Bricca Company, an exclusive mail order house doing an extensive business. Ref.: This edition is not registered in ICCU. OCLC, 1723558.
