Lear fu infaticabile e coraggioso viaggiatore, eseguì schizzi prima in Europa nel Mediterraneo poi in Egitto e nel Medio Oriente. Egli voleva, come si espresse, “topographise all the journeyngs of my life”. Per citare sommariamente, pubblicò Views of Rome and its Environs nel 1841, due serie di Illustrated Excursions in Italy, Journal of a Landscape Painter in Southern Calabria, Views in seven Ionian Islands e Journal of Landscape Painter in Corsica nel 1870.
