folio [38 x 28 cm]; a collection of 52 finely engraved plates, proofs on India paper, bound in volume. contemporary half green morocco with gilt spine title lettering, a. e. g., marbled boards, marbled endpaper, cover rubbed, corner wear, dampstain to lower margin, light foxing on some leaves, mostly marginal, very good, with original ribbon bookmark. A pi The attractive plates are views of countryside, towns, sea scenes, etc, images of varying size but average about 14 x 10 cm, plus nice large margins, and are a collection made in the 19th century of this famous artist's work. Stanfield (1793-1867), member of the Royal Academy, friend of Charles Dickens and Captain Maryatt, illustrated many fine books and plate books of the period. He is regarded as one of England's finest marine painters, and considered as Turner's rival as a delineator of cloud forms. Many of his works are in important galleries and museums.
