A picture of this book is available upon The author, who was Secretary to the US legation in St. Petersburg and Consul-General at Constantinople, travelled extensively in the area, including the Steppe, Syr Darya, Tashkent, bazaars, Mussleman life, Samarkand, Karafshan Valley, Hodjent, Kurma, Khokand, Bukhara, Issyk Kul, Semiretch, Kuldja, Khivan campaign, Russian policy, etc. 'Monumental.
