8vo [22 x 14 cm]; iv, 460 pp, engraved view plate frontis 'Bridge of Hide Ropes over the River La Plata', folding engraved map of Colombia (tear), with additional folding engraved map not called for (see below). contemporary half calf and marbled boards, gilt title lettering on leather spine label, gilt spine decorative design, edges rubbed, bookplate removed from endpaper, internal hinge weak but holding, interior clean and near fine in very good cover. A pictur Palau 175295. Sabin 49918. Abbey Travel 717. Griffen 3699. A narrative of the author's travels with descriptions of people, government, finance, living conditions, customs, revolt, climate, slavery, religion, housing, etc, including much on Bogota, travels on Magdalena River, Rio Negro, Honda, Rio Seco, journey to the province of Socorro, Carthagena, Popayan Guaduas, Chagauani, San Juan, Tambo del Ovo, town of Panama, Paramos, Gorgona, Chagres, and others. This copy has a folding engraved map on rear endpaper, 'A General Map of South America, Drawn from the Best Sources', by John Russell, published London 1794 (tear at stub repaired with tape), a detailed map showing rivers, towns, mountain ranges. This map was added by a previous owner.
