Description

First edition. With frontispiece and nine plates of illustrations by J. Allen St. John. 8vo, original mossy green cloth lettered on the upper cover and spine in black. 256, 8 ads. pp. A very nice and handsome copy, the text only very lightly mellowed, the cloth still attractive with only a little minor wear at the tips, the inner hinges reinforced with a cloth tape.

Edizione: a very early burroughs mars novel, only the fourth of the series. it is also the first to shift the center character from being john carter to his son, the half earthman carthoris, and thuvia of ptarth. while in many ways typical of the barsoon novels there are some very inventive elements in the story. one of which is an autopilot and collision detection device for martian fliers, and another being the creation of the lotharians, a race of ancient martians who have become adept at telepathic projection, able to create imaginary warriors that can kill, and sustain themselves through thought alone.
