8vo [22.5 x 15 cm]; xl, 178 pp, fine frontis portrait with tissue guard, folding plate, other illus, 3 maps including one in color, bibliog, index, Lancaster's coat of arms on title page. original blue blind-stamped cloth, gilt vignette, gilt spine title lettering, fine, clean copy, cover & gilt bright, in dj (chipped at edge, a little faded), with loose notice to members from publisher. A picture of this book is available upon request by Based on three voyages, 1591 to 1603, Foster collected together all existing sources concerning Lancaster's voyages, including from contemporary pamphlets and what appeared in Hakluyt, and provides a detailed introduction, and there are 5 appendices including one on Lancaster's hints for a voyage to the east. National Maritime Museum I, 402. Borba de Moraes I, 454: 'Concerning the second voyage, during which Lancaster attacked Pernambuco, he published Hakluyt's version and the complete text of the very rare pamphlet written by Henry Roberts. Foster's introduction is very valuable for the study of the voyages and life of this famous navigator'. The two voyages to the East Indies were not only important in themselves but were important in establishing regular intercourse by sea between Europe and the Far East, and to the East India Company. The book is rarely found in a dust jacket.
