Description

Buchblock gelst. Ecke beston, sonst gut. - If it Is true that certain cities can provoke certain states of mind, certain ways of thinking and reaction, then this is especially true of Vienna. Vienna, situated on the extreme southeastern edge of the German speaking region of central Europe, became a kind of melting pot for different peoples. Hungarians, Slovaks, Germans, Czechoslovaks. This rich mingling produced a fruitful atmosphere for creative activity. In the 19th century, Vienna was a leading theater and music city. Yet, this relatively small, conservative, Catholic metropolis also produced an atmosphere of frivolity, salon intrigues, decadence of every persuasion, black masses, exorcism. Death, murder, suicide molded the way of thinking for generations. Excess became an act of self destruction. This world-as if created especially for Sigmund Freud-enriched the art of decadence by giving birth to a new variation-psychoanalysis.
