Description

Randlren, leicht berieben und beston, innen sehr sauber / Edge wear, slightly rubbed and bumped, inside very clean - Since 1873, when the seventh volume of Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum was published, containing all the then known inscriptions cut during the Roman occupation of Britain, over a thousand new inscriptions have come to light. They have been published in Ephemeris Epigraphica and the Journal of Roman Studies, but for some years scholars have feit the need of a publication which would provide an authoritative record in volume form of texts widely scattered and seldom illustrated. -- The Roman Inscriptions of Britain seeks to fulfil that need. This volume com-prises the inscriptions on stone contained in CIL vii and over 1,200 additional ones discovered up to 1954, in all 2,400. Every extant inscription is illustrated by a line-block reproduced in scale by R. G. Collingwoods method of contact-draw-ing, and in addition half-tone plates are used mainly to show sculptured details. The text gives transcription, translation, description, bibliography, and the notes; and there are concordances with CIL and subsequent publications, a glossary, and an index of sites. -- A second volume, in active preparation, will contain the inscriptions of the Instrumentum Domesticum, on materials other than stone.
