“A New Edition”, and an early printing with J.M.W. Turner's illustrations. With an engraved portrait by Vertue as frontispiece and a number of handsome steel-engraved plates after J. M. W. Turner. 8vo, in a fine contemporary of full maroon morocco, the covers with multi-ruled and tooled gilt frames, the spine with raised bands separating compartment which are elaborately gilt decorated within gilt ruled panels, one compartment lettered in gilt. A finely engraved and presentation plate bordered in gold is hand calligraphed by the donor, all edges gilt. cvi, 767. A most handsome copy, internally quite fine, the binding sound, clean, bright and well preserved.

Edizione: scarce and important issue with a beautiful presentation plate bordered in gold and colours. a fine printing of milton’s great poetry with the steel engraved plates of j.m.w. turner. it includes a long “life of milton” and a scholarly appendix. it was the editor’s ambition to produce, “the first complete and perfect edition of the poetical works of john milton” and to restore them to their original purity and to provide critical and explanatory notes and to do all this in a manner that will make it accessible to all of his countrymen. an ambitious desire, and one well rendered into reality. it contains all of milton’s important works, including paradise lost, paradise regained, samson agonistes, sonnets, odes, miscellanies and all the others.
