8vo [22.5 x 15 cm]; 2 volumes, xlv, 295; xiii, [295] - 551 pp, index. original blue blind-stamped cloth, gilt vignette, gilt spine title lettering, spines a little faded and bit worn at edges, rear endpaper of volume I pasted down, very good, clean copy. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. 'It contains an exposition of the ideas of learned men of the sixteenth century on physical geography, and it is one of the leading authorities on the ancient civilizations of Peru and Mexico. . . The Natural History of Acosta has been much used by subsequent writers on Peru and Mexico.' [Introduction]. Markham provides a good historical introduction to the work. Volume I is devoted to the natural history of the regions with considerable detail. Volume II is on the customs, beliefs, festivals, ceremonies, etc, of the native peoples.
