Aldersgate, Edward Knight [For Tutt], 1890-1893. 8vo (21.1 x 13.5 cm, or very slightly larger). 1,427 pp. (titles and wrappers not counted); 13 lithographed plates, mostly in chromolithography). Uniform contemporary red half morocco over gilt-bordered red, pebbled cloth. Spines with gilt-stippled lines, gilt vignettes, and title. Brown endpapers. Speckled edges. = The rare start of this important British entomological and evolutionary journal, in a very nice, well-preserved, uniform binding. The author and editor, James William Tutt (1858-1911) was a very productive British entomologist: his publications occupy more than ten pages in Horn-Schenkling II. Two volumes (I and IV) include the ephemeral printed wrappers of the single issues), a detailed collation is as follows. I (1890-1891): title page, xxiv (index), 360, [xlviii (printed wrappers)]; II (1891): title page, xxiv (index), 312 pp.; III (1892): 320, [i] (preface), vii-xiv (index); IV (1893): title page, viii (contents); ix-xx (index), 348, [xxxii] (printed wrappers). All plates are present but plate numbering is peculiar: [I, II, V, A; VII, VIII, III; VI, (no number, probably this should be B), IV; C, IX, D].
