Description

8vo., Ninth Impression, with double-page map, free endpapers faintly spotted; original green cloth, backstrip lettered in silver, a very good, bright, clean copy in price-clipped dustwrapper, the latter with crudely repaired tear at tail of backstrip. Published fifteen months after the first edition. The finest novel of the Royal Navy in WWII and a maritime classic. The story, based upon the author's own experiences, formed the basis of Charles Frend's stirring feature film (1953) starring Jack Hawkins in one of his most memorable roles. So accurate is its depiction of the Battle of the Atlantic that it is one of the very few works of fiction admitted by Law to his standard bibliography The Royal Navy in World War Two. EARLY PRINTINGS ARE INCREASINGLY ELUSIVE IN THIS CONDITION. Law, 1865 (recording the first edition).
