Description

Remarkable assault on the integrity of various members of Newcastle Town Council, in the form of 52 individual and largely unflattering pen portraits. Written anonymously by a former councillor for the Radicals, clearly not enamoured by the Whigs and the 'clique' of Tories who had, until a recent election, been dominant in local politics. To ensure that the reader allocates each critique to the correct target, the names of councillors have been added in pencil by a contemporary hand, likely the author's, at the head of each description. Exceptionally scarce in any edition, let alone first as here, but clearly popular as two further editions appeared between this publication in November and the end of 1836. Stock is toned, with occasional light marking, but in general all is in good internal order. Small paper remnant stuck to title page. Bound in contemporary half leather with marbled paper-covered boards, all well worn, but not unattractive. 8vo. 64pp
