Description

2 volumes. The fine Winchester Edition. With 30 full-page etchings by William Strang and D.Y. Camerson, 42 smaller illustrations throughout the text, and large fold-out facsimile "Last Will and Testament". Large 8vo, publisher's original green cloth, the upper covers with large gilt device of Isaak Walton, the spines gilt lettered, gilt rules at the spine tips, t.e.g. lxvii, 169; ix, 232 pp. A nice set, internally quite fine with the paper being fresh and clean, the green cloth mellowed, more so at the spines which also have some light wear to the fips.

Edizione: the very handsome winchester edition, the text being an exact reprint in spelling and punctuation of the fifth edition, the last to be published in walton's lifetime. to this are many valuable additions such as grey's essay, walton's will and the many finely engraved plates.<br> a beloved classic of the english language and what many call the finest "how-to" book ever written; walton's angler has been described as "full of wisdom, kindly humour, and charity; it is one of the most delightful and care-dispelling books in the language." "more than most authors he lives in his writings, which are the pure expression of a kind, humorous and pious soul in love with nature, while the expression itself is unique for apparent simplicity which is really elaborately studied art" (dnb).
