Description

This is in fact the 1808 (possibly 1809) publication 'The Stranger's Guide Through London' by William Carey, retitled and reissued by Thomas Tegg (notorious buyer of other publishers' distressed stock) with a new title page. Maybe printed from the original plates, but more likely bound up from exiting sheets. Carey's book is scare, with only one copy in library ownership (British Library), while the Tegg 'imprint' is only held by two (British Library and Wellcome Foundation). This copy is thus Tegg's engraved frontispiece and title page, followed by Carey's folding map and letterpress. The map is scare in itself, showing London, Westminster & Southwark. Text is a comprehensive guide to London life, from the broadly historical through to the minutiae of daily business such as watermen's fares on the river and rates of taxation on servants. Occasional foxing and toning, but in general good internal order. Map is toned and leading edge and creases have been strengthened. Volume has been attractively rebound in full red leather with gilt on black title piece to spine. 24mo. [2], 399pp + index
