12mo [19.5 x 13 cm]; xii, [13]- 358, 8, [ads] pp, frontis of three roller cane mill, illustrations including full-page. original brown cloth, gilt vignette and title lettering on spine, cover with small stain, bit faded, damp stains in lower margins not effecting text, endpaper inscribed Douglas Brothers, good copy with only light foxing in some outer margins. A picture of The author describes the history of the Chinese sugar cane, description of the plant, culture, value as a forage plant, the making of sugar, syrup, vinegar, etc, techniques and methods, use of the sugar beet. The appendix includes a pamphlet by Joseph S. Lovering, a well-known sugar refiner of Philadelphia, on practical instructions, as well as a History of the Sorgho in the Southern States by D. Redmond, and other documents. The section on the Imphree is by Leonard Wray and includes the discovery of the plant, varieties, botany, yields of sugar, cultivation, comparisons, etc. This edition has a number of additions, sections, not in the original edition.
