Front boards of volumes I, III and IV are completely detached from spines. Front board of volume II is almost completely detached from spine. Decorative spines are very worn and rubbed. Part of text on spines of volumes I, III and IV has been torn away; no text is visible on spine of volume II. Leading corners are very worn, with some fabric loss. Page blocks remain very clean overall, with only a small stain on the foot of volume III. Heads of page blocks are a plum colour; face and feet are pale red. Plates, probably from a personal library, are on front pastedowns. Copperplate marginalia in both ink and pencil are on front pastedowns and endpapers. Front endpapers of volumes I and III have come loose. Pastedowns, endpapers and first and last few pages have moderate age - related spotting and faded, but item has relatively light age - spotting overall. Binding remains relatively sound.
