Vaclav Jamek qui vit à Prague a écrit cet essai sur lui-même directement en français. Il y parle de son inaptitude fondamentale au bonheur, de sa propension à ce qu'il appelle "l'exaspération féconde". Il dit également sa situation inconfortable de citoyen d'un pays toujours en porte-à-faux dans l'histoire, ses déboires d'homosexuel, ses séjours en France, pour laquelle il n'est pas tendre. Mais ce sentiment tragique de la vie n'étouffe pas la veine comique et dérisoire si typique de la culture tchèque.
