12mo [20 x 13 cm]; [ii], 349 pp, 18 fine hand colored plates, with frontis, other illustrations, index. morocco backed boards, gilt title lettering on black leather label, new endpapers, name on title page, very light foxing to few leaves, very good+, sound and tight copy, with the original ribbon bookmark. A picture of this book is available upon request b The hand colored plates in this first edition are much nicer than later editions, also, most later editions had fewer plates, making this first edition much more desirable. Freeman 3044. Massachusetts Horticultural Society p. 251 had only the 3rd edition. The author was a respected writer on natural history and botany subjects. 'This is one of the most interesting books that the botanist can wish for' (The World We Live In).
