Description

Sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - Contents -- Preface -- The Propertian Ring -- The Propertian Stream -- The Propertian Leitmotif -- The Propertian Vortex -- Propertius' Poetics of Imagism -- Propertius in the Renaissance and Beyond -- Interest in Sextus Propertius in the twentieth century has been immense. He has been translated by Ezra Pound and Robert Lowell, apparently imitated by James Joyce, and studied and commented upon by Benedetto Croce. These are some of the prominent names of twentieth-century modernism, and no other ancient author has elicited such attention. If the early Middle Ages were the aetas Vergiliana and the eleventh century the aetas Ovidiana, the twentieth century might be the aetas Propertiana. -- For all of this popularity among nonclassicists, classicists have not known quite what to make of Propertius. Classical scholars have not even been able to accomplish what seems to be the basic task in the study of an ancient author, that is, to determine his text. Standard editions of Catullus or Ovid vary little, but in Propertius lines are transposed, poems are divided in various ways or connected to adjoining poems, and lacunae are printed here and there. A popular aphorism in Propertian textual criticism is "quot editores, tot Propertii" ( "however many editors there are, there are that many Propertii" ) . Even the novice reader of Propertius is expected to be textual critic and literary critic rolled into one. It is no wonder that very few graduate students in classics, and almost no undergraduates, have ever read him. ISBN 9780809314539
