Description

Washington, DC, Smithsonian Institution, 1853. 4to (31.7 x 24.0 cm). 24 pp.; ten mounted, lithographed platess. Later blue boards with printed label on the front board. = An important early contribution to the botany of the American West Coast by the American botanist John Torrey (1796-1873), based upon material collected by Colonel John Charles Frémont or Fremont (1813-1890). Frémont, as is spelled here, ".was an American explorer, politician, and soldier who, in 1856, became the first candidate of the Republican Party for the office of President of the United States. During the 1840s, when he led five expeditions into the American West, that era's penny press and admiring historians accorded Frémont the sobriquet The Pathfinder." (Wikipedia). Published in the Institute's Contributions to Knowledge. Plates shorter than the text leaves (as published) and reinforced with linen on versos. Very uncommon. Currently no other copies on the internet. A very good copy. Stafleu and Cowan, 14759.
