8vo [23.5 x 15.5 cm]; 288 pp, frontis (portrait), 46 illustrations on plates, map, index. original cloth, gilt spine title lettering, cloth faded from sun, short tear at spine head, edges a little rubbed, signature on endpaper, slightly spotted on title, else clean, very good. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. The introduction by Dr. G. M. Vevers, superintendent of the London Zoological Society, describes the author as 'a strong advocate of shooting with the camera rather than with the rifle, and realizes full well the importance of preserving big game from extinction for the benefit of future generations'. The author, who had spent over twenty years in Africa, describes hunting elephant with a spear, journey down the Bahr-el-Arab, the Dinkas, witchcraft and superstition, night photography, lions, Habbania, big game and smaller animals, with several chapters on the African elephant. He travelled through Sudan, Abyssinia, Congo, Uganda, Kenya, etc.
