8vo [23 x 15 cm]; 2 volumes, xvi, 560; viii, 604 pp, folding map of the Dead Sea coasts and the Land of Moab, dated 1853, folding plan of the Temple of Mount Gerizim, Samaria, text illus. original blind-stamped green cloth, gilt spine lettering, joint with short tear, spine ends of volume frayed, new matching front endpaper, small light blind-stamp on titles, very good solid set, partly unopened. A picture of this book is available upon re Blackmer 1453. "He was one of the first to study the area" (Blackmer). First published in French in 1853, the author, a member of the French Institute, travelled with several others, including the botanist Michon, from Beyrout (Beirut) through parts of Syria to Jerusalem and around the Dead Sea area, including Massada, Jericho, Sodom, Zoar, through the deserts, etc. He describes the peoples, ruins, archaeology, nature, scenery, cities, etc, in detail.
