Antiporta xilografica (disegnata e incisa da Whymper) con veduta del Weisshorn dal Riffel. Piccoli restayri alle cuffie. Buon esemplare. Timbri ed etichetta del tempo della Coleraine Library. Prima edizione. Il volume contiene fra l'altro il resoconto della prima ascensione del Weisshorn, la più importante impresa alpinistica del Tyndall. Perret, 4355: 'Le professeur Tyndall a été l'un des rares alpinistes britanniques de l'âge d'or à bénéficier d'une traduction de ses principaux récits d'ascensions en français'. Neate, 837: 'From a scientific beginning, [Tyndall] took more and more to the pleasures of mountaineering, his greatest climb being the first ascent of the Weisshorn. He was also a contender for the first ascent of the Matterhorn.'. Cox, Classics in the Literature of Mountaineering, 15: 'The Golden Age of mountaineering produced a literature which has yet to be surpassed. . .The British scientist, John Tyndall, was an outstanding example of these pioneers. 1861 was his great year of climbing. He mad the first ascent of the Weisshorn and made an early attempt on the Matterhorn, which is described in this work'.
