8vo [22 x 14.5 cm]; 4 volumes, xiv, 406; xiv, 306; xii, [307]-596; x, [597]-798 pp, 4 frontispieces, numerous illus, plates and maps, including many folding and one in rear pocket, bibliog, glossary, indexes. original cloth, gilt vignettes on front covers, each volume with dust jacket (lightly chipped on one spine, very small stain on another, spines lightly faded), but a clean fine set. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. Important works on the exploration of the Niger following its discovery by Mungo Park. The first volume consists of Friedrich Hornemann's Travels, 1797-98 from Cairo to Murzuk and Laing's trip to Timbuktu from 1824 to 1826. The other three volumes describe the Bornu Mission of 1822-25 based on the writings of Denham, Clapperton and Oudney. A comprehensive and useful description of African explorations.
