It was composed of 40 Italian members, hence the current name “Society of XL”. With the favour of the Napoleonic regime, it was transferred in 1797 to Milan, then to Modena, where it could carry out its activities even after the Restoration. With the annexation of the Duchy of Modena to the Kingdom of Italy, it moved to Pisa, Milan, Naples, Rome, back to Pisa, then finally to Rome. The name “Accademia nazionale dei XL”, dating from 1949, was changed to the current “Accademia nazionale delle scienze” by a statute of 1979. The author edits the publication of Memoirs and Annals.Italian Union Catalogue: Tomo I: UBOE\006457, Tomo II part I: UBOE\006461, Tomo II part II: UBOE\006462; Riccardi, vol.
