Description

12mo (136x78 mm), eighteenth century full brown leather binding, with five raised bands at spine, gilt lettering and decorations at spine, red sprinkled edges; pp. 330, [6]. At the end of the work there are the remarkable notes of Hugo Grotius. A FINE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY EDITION OF THE "CIVIL WAR", BETTER KNOWN AS THE "PHARSALIA", A LATIN EPIC ON ROMAN HISTORY, WRITTEN IN DACTYLIC HEXAMETERS, AND THE MAIN WORK OF THE STOIC POET LUCAN. Marcus Annaeus Lucanus (November 3, 39 AD – April 30, 65 AD), better known in English as Lucan, was a Roman poet, born in Corduba (modern-day Córdoba), in the Hispania Baetica. Despite his short life, he is regarded as one of the outstanding figures of the Imperial Latin period. His youth and speed of composition set him apart from other poets. References: IT\ICCU\CFIE\019909. OCLC, 490628124 and 46994958. Cond.: Traces of use to the binding, with abrasions to the corners, lacks at spine-ends, partially split hinges, faded gilt decorations. Overall, a good copy.
