Victime de nombreux préjugés, le théâtre français du seizième siècle a souffert injustement de la comparaison avec les chefs-d'oeuvre classiques, alors que ses fins étaient toutes différentes. Quelques excellent ouvrages, des recherches érudites ont rétabli la juste perspective et rendu possible la présente tentative d'en donner puor la première fois un tableau d'ensemble. L'anarchie dramatique d'un siècle en fermentation ne saurait dissimuler sa richesse et son importance dans l'histoire du théâtre français.
