Description

First Edition of the text-block with the 1917 title-page re-titling the book after its first chapter. The original Cote d'Emeraude half-title remains in the copy. With 20 beautiful colourplates from the paintings of J. Hardwicke Lewis and a fold-out map. Tall 8vo, original dark sea-blue cloth with geometric decoration on upper cover and spine in light yello, spine and upper cover both lettered in yellow. viii; 176 pp. A nice and bright copy, the text essentially pristine without so much as a touch of spotting or toning, the plates all very fine with captioned tissue guards, the cloth with no fading and vivid colour, hinges firm and fine, a lovely copy.

Edizione: an excellent copy of this lovely book. musson wonderfully describes france's emerald coast, "that deep embroidered border of orchard, field and town, golden beaches and iron cliffs, round the edge of the great gulf of malo." the beautiful paintings include landmarks such as mont st. michel and chateau de combourg, but also include the simple ways of life and the gentle scenery of a land 'où les jamais sont les toujours.'
