8vo; 2 volumes, xvii, 270; xv, [271]-446 pp, 16 plates, maps and charts, including folding, 3 tables of islands discovered, including 2 folding, detailed bibliog, index. original cloth, gilt vignettes, gilt spine title lettering, dj's (slightly faded spine), else fine and clean set, unmarked. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. Pedro Fernandez de Quiros was a remarkable explorer and navigator who sailed in 1595 as chief pilot of the Spanish expedition to the Solomon Islands, returning to the New Hebrides in 1605, which is the subject of this book. The author's 130 page introduction provides a useful context for the expedition, and sheds much light on 17th century explorations.
