Description
8°; 276 ll.; lightly browned. Elegant contemporary light-brown morocco (untouched), triple-fillet gilt double panel with blind-tooled floral pieces, gilt central wreath with title on frontal cover and Fortuna with a sail on rear (a few small wormholes, head and tail bands slightly rubbed). 17th-century owner’s signature “Claudii Dactyli” on rear pastedown. Excellent copy from the Novacco library (bookplate to front pastedown).
Remarkable example of a Bolognese Renaissance binding upon Venetian models, probably made by the "secondo Maestro alla vignette". De Marinis ( n° 3061 bis) records as a Bolognese product a binding with very similar tools, correcting Gumuchian’s attribution to the Venetian area (n° 63).
The publisher mistook the author of these Biblical commentaries (a monk from Auxerre flourished in the eight century) for a contemporary namesake, the bishop of Halberstadt, who was also a learned exegete. The owner’s signature on the rear pastedown belongs to Claudio Dattilo, a Roman prelate, bibliophile and correspondent of Federico Borromeo. In 1623, he presented one of his manuscripts to the newly-established Ambrosiana library. Several books of his are held in the Biblioteca Diocesana of Siena.
