The author of the successful "Into the Heart of Borneo", and the more recent, "Congo Journey", "Show No Mercy", and was natural history editor of the Times Literary Supplement, offers his well written, interesting and humorous account of Amazon travel in Venezuela, during a four month expedition, with encounters with aboriginal peoples (Yanomami), their drug of choice (yoppa), animals, nature. The author refers to previous explorers including Humboldt, Wallace and Bates, and graphically describes the hazards and dangers of the jungle. He is now recognized as one of the best modern travel writers.
