8vo [22.5 x 16 cm]; 2 volumes, xiv, [ii], 547; xvi, 540; 45 plates including 2 steel-engraved frontis's (portraits), 4 maps including 3 folding in pockets, numerous other illustrations and portraits from photos and drwgs, one chart in color, index. original pictorial gilt cloth, gilted signature of author & title on covers, gilt vignette on spines, map of Africa on both volumes in blind-stamp, signature on endpaper, slightly rubbed at edges, complete, clean and fine set, no tears on maps. A picture One of the classic African travels by this experienced American traveller and writer, published in London in same year, and translated into a number of other languages. According to DNB, the expedition "accomplished great things; it had made notable additions to African geography and ethnology". Work 26. Very well-illustrated.
