Description

Small folio (ca. 198 x 309 mm). (12), 200, (2 [instead of 4]) pp. Title-page printed in red and black. With engraved title-page and 100 engraved plates. Contemporary full vellum with handwritten title label to spine. First edition. - This inventive emblem book, depicting various aspects of nature and human life in text and image, is considered "one of Abraham's rarest works" (Faber du Faur). An engraved plate and two pages of text are dedicated to each subject, the plate bearing an emblematic illustration by the German engraver Christoph Weigel, with a poem in Latin and German below. While the Latin verses are by Abraham himself, the German ones are by the Nuremberg headmaster Samuel Faber (1657-1716). The subsequent two pages of text end with a short fable. Subjects include the sun and the moon, air, rain, snow, thunder, mountains and the sea, as well as flowers and several animals, cities and castles, war, hunger, and the plague. - Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. 20th century pencil notes to front pastedown, stating the short title, a collation and condition report with the date of purchase (15 Oct. 1960, Gilhofer in Vienna). A list of keywords with corresponding page numbers by the same hand to flyleaf. - Wants the final leaf of the index. Pagination of pp. 2-80 added in pencil; pages 7f., 74 and 79 have printed pagination. Lower edges of the first few pages remargined. Marginal flaw to pp. 195f. (no loss to text); pp. 195-199 and the following plate somewhat waterstained. Marginal marks in pencil to several pages near the end. Paper slightly brownstained and fingerstained throughout. - VD 18, 15228630. D nnhaupt I, 48.1. Bertsche 48a, 1. Faber du Faur 1125. Goedeke III, 240, 25. Landwehr 11. Praz 242. Heyse 894.
